Revamp Your Images with Canva’s Magic Edit Feature

It used to be that magic was considered nothing more than a superstition, an illusion of sorts that would trick the mind. But now it seems as though magic really exists, or were closer to it than ever before.

But not magic in the usual sense. We are talking about the evolution of software applications like Canva, which can perform tasks that just a few years ago would take minutes or even hours to do correctly, and performing these takes a matter of seconds.

These come in the form of AI tools, short for artificial intelligence. One such ai told it is used in Canva is the magic edit feature, which allows you to select an object within an image and then replace it with an entirely different object.

Along with the Magic Eraser and text-to-image tools, Magic Edit allows Canva to perform more imaginative tasks than ever before. These tools will enable us to complete tasks that would otherwise take far longer to do. The Magic Edit tool, in particular, lives up to its magical name as it’s almost like applying a spell on your photos and images.

What Type Of Tool Is Magic Edit?

The Magic Edit tool is a special tool in Canva, as it’s one of the few to use artificial intelligence as its technology base.

Artificial intelligence has a growing number of use cases in the creative fields of artistry and design. In Canva, a few tools use artificial intelligence, such as the magic edit tool.

To perform specific tasks, artificial intelligence is necessary because the software may need to understand certain things about the design or image in order to make changes based on that task.

Magic edits, for example, is a two-step process of deleting existing elements in an image and then replacing them with new elements. Artificial intelligence is required to successfully identify elements and know how to replace them.

How To Use The Magic Edit Tool In Canva?

To use the Magic Edits tool in Canva, the first thing we need to do is create a new template or canvas for our next design. We can do this by going to the top corner of the canvas homepage and selecting the Create a Design option.

We can then choose from one of the templates, such as a Facebook ad template, or create our own custom resolution and then click the button to take us to the canvas page.

Once we have our blank canvas, we can then begin to add elements to our canvas, and these elements come in different forms, which can be viewed from the far side of the page.

There are many different options to choose from here, but the one we want is elements. Left-click and then type in what you want to add to your canvas.

For our example, we will type living room into the textbox and then choose a photo of a living space where we can isolate an object.

Pick an image to use

In this image we have selected, there is a hanging light that has the potential for editing. Let’s say we wanted to transform this light into a hanging plant pot.

To make this change, first, left-click on the image to ensure that it is the selected elements on your canvas. Then take a look in the header bar for the canvas tools. You should see an option to Edit Photo. Left click, and it will bring up some additional tools in the side panel.

Edit Photo Menu

These tools are split up into a few sections. The first section allows us to use tools based on artificial intelligence, such as the Background Remover, the Magic Eraser, and the Magic Edit Tools.

From this first section, left-click on Magic Edit, and it will open up a secondary menu. The tool is split up into three stages.

Magic Edit Options

In the first stage, you will be able to determine the size of your brush. The Magic Edits hall requires manual inputs for the areas of the image that you want to replace. A larger brush size is more suitable for larger objects, but we recommend typically sticking to the default brush size, which is around 20.

You do not have to be too precise with your brush, as there is a bit of room to maneuver. Plus, if you highlight the area that surrounds an object, it will actually improve the magic edit tool.

This is because it’s going to try and fit whatever you want to position within that area as a whole and not just replace the object itself.

Highlight Area Of Lamp

Once you have highlighted an area on your image, you can either choose to continue onto the next stage or reset the brush. This can be useful if your brush overlaps other objects, as you ideally don’t want to replace them.

Our brush only highlights the hanging lamp and the area that immediately surrounds it. So we’re going to use the continue button to move on to the second stage.

The next stage allows you to describe what you want to replace your selection with. You can be as detailed as you need to, or if you’re not sure, you can use one of the tips directly below for inspiration.

For our example, we’re going to type in the words hanging plant and then click where it says generate.

Canva Renders Results

Canva will automatically move on to the next step and attempt to render four examples of objects based on your text prompt.

Again, we not only recommend highlighting the image that you want to replace but also as much of the surrounding area as possible. This will make it easier for the Magic Edit tool to create more accurate images for your replacement object.

We can at this stage, choose any of the four results that have been generated for us, or we can press the Regenerate button to try again if we’re not happy with them.

Once you are happy with the result, just click Done at the bottom, and it will confirm the changes made by the magic edit tool.

Do You Need Canva Pro To Use Magic Edit?

Like many other online applications, Canva has both a free version and a paid version. The free version you can use for as long as you need to, and it allows you to use many of the tools available to Canva.

The paid version is subscription-based and permits you to use the most powerful tools. In Canva, this is known as Canva Pro.

Unfortunately, Canva does not allow you to use its AI-based tools with the free version, and they are typically exclusive to Canberra Pro. This means we cannot use the magic edit unless we have a subscription to Canva Pro.

This also applies to other tools based on artificial intelligence, including the Magic Erase at All and the Text to Image feature.

What Is The Difference Between Magic Edit And Eraser?

It can be easy to get confused between two of the AI tools, namely Magic Edit and Magic Eraser. They are pretty similar, but there is a critical distinction between the two.

The Magic Eraser tool allows you to highlight elements using a brush, and then Canva will attempt to delete those elements from your image or photo.

On the other hand, magic edit allows you to also highlight elements so that they can be deleted, but this is just one stage in the process.

We then have to tell Canva what we want to replace that element with, and then Canva will, as best it can, attempt to replace one object with another.

On the face of it, Magic Edit appears to be an even more intelligent tool than Magic Eraser. However, as we have already noted, Magic Edit is not perfect at this time.

There will also be many use cases when you only want to erase an object and not replace it with another, so there are certainly use cases for each tool.

If you want to learn more about using the Magic Eraser tool to remove elements from your photos, take a look at the article here.

Does The Magic Edit Tool Only Work With Photos?

The various elements that we use in Canva can be divided up into various types. Examples of these element types include photos, images, and text. We can also add in things like custom shapes and stickers to our designs.

Each of these types has its own set of tools available for editing. When it comes to using AI tools such as magic edit, the photo type of element is required. However, this does not mean that the element itself has to be a photo.

There are many examples, such as backgrounds or even other images, that allow us to edit using AI tools. You can confirm this by selecting your element and then going to the header bar of the canvas. If you find the button that says Edit Photo then you will find the AI tools, such as Magic Edit, within this section.

If you see something like Edit Image instead, then you are far less likely to find the AI-based tools, although the other tool sets, such as the filters, will still be available.

Can You Combine Magic Edit With Text To Image?

In addition to being able to work with any full image or photo that you would attain from Canva’s own database or upload yourself, you can also use the magic edit tool with images created using the text-to-image feature.

To use text-to-image, return to the side panel when working on the canvas and then go down to the bottom where you will see the availability of the text-to-image feature. Left Click to access its functions.

Here you have the ability to type in a text prompt, The more detailed the better, and when you confirm this text prompt, Canvas will attempt to generate 4 images for you based on your description.

Now, the text image feature is not perfect, and even though multiple images are generated, none of them may be exactly what you’re looking for. Magic edit actually works really well in conjunction with text-to-image.

Using Magic Edit, we can highlight a specific element from our generated image and then replace it with another.

As you would with normal photos, make sure to highlight as much space as possible within the image as the more space you highlight with the brush, the more room the magic edit all has to work with when it comes to generating the new objects or elements.

If you are interested in experimenting with the text to image feature, you can learn how using the article here.

Can I Use Different Ai Tools Like Magic Eraser And Magic Edit?

While it is entirely possible to use the Magic Edit tool in combination with the Text to Image feature, it’s a different story for the other AI tools that you would find in the Edit Photo section.

It is not possible to use the tools together and if you were to attempt to use say the magic edit all after using the magic eraser you will get a prompt that warns you of Canva’s intention to revert changes made by the previous tool.

This is not necessarily because they are AI tools but because they have very similar purposes. The background remover tool, for example, attempts to remove the entire background of an image. Maintaining the main focus point, which could be a human in a photo, for example.

The purpose of the Magic Eraser told is to highlight individual elements within our photos and delete those. While the Magic edits hold allows us to highlight elements in the same way that the Magic Eraser does, but then replace those elements with other objects.

The functionality of these three tools overlaps significantly, which is why it’s not even required to have them usable with each other. There won’t be any realistic use cases where you would be looking to edit out one object for another and then just remove it anyway with the background remover.

Since it first starting to make waves in 2022 I have believed that a lot of what we will be able to do in the future will be assisted by artificial intelligence, and that the more you know about how to best use ai, the better a position you will be in regardless of your field and industry.
